What is the Basic Periodontal Examination (BPE)?
The BPE is a basic periodontal screening method for patients. It is a simple procedure that should be carried out on all dentate patients. It helps to quickly screen for any periodontal issues and then direct management.
Which instrument is used for the BPE?
For the BPE, the prob used is called the CPITN or WHO Probe.
The probe is specifically designed for the BPE. The following features are noted on the probe:
- A 0.5mm ball at the tip
- A black band from 3.5 to 5.5mm
- A further black band from 8.5mm to 11.5mm
