By the end of these revision notes, you should be able to:
Classifications of Malocclusion
A commonly used classification for malocclusions is Angle’s classification. However, incisor and canine classifications are also used to provide additional information regarding malocclusions.
Incisor Classification
The incisor classification is based upon the relationship of the mandibular incisor tip relative to the cingulum plateau of the maxillary central incisor, when in centric occlusion.
The British Standards Institute’s incisor classification is as follows:
Class

Class I
|
The mandibular incisor occludes at or below the cingulum plateau of the maxillary central incisors
|
Class II
|
The mandibular incisor tip lies posterior to the cingulum plateau of the maxillary central incisors
|
Class II Division 1
|
This is a Class II incisor relationship where the maxillary incisors are proclined with an increased overjet
|
Class II Division 1
|
This is a Class II incisor relationship where the maxillary incisors are retroclined with a reduced overjet, but often a deep overbite
|
Class III
|
The mandibular incisor tip lies anterior to the cingulum plateau of the maxillary incisors - the overjet is reduced or reversed
