Orthopantomograms, OPTs (also referred to as DPTs and OPGs), are panoramic extra-oral radiographs that can be carried out for patients. They help provide an overview of a patient’s dentition as well as surrounding anatomy. You can read more about the various forms of extra-oral radiography here

Anatomy of the Mandible

The mandibular condyle (brown) can be seen as a rounded, radiopaque area located within the glenoid fossa towards the lateral aspects of the panoramic film. The coronoid proceed (yellow) is found medial to the condyle as a triangular, radiopaque area. It may superimpose over the maxillary tuberosity and the maxillary sinus making interpretation difficult.
