What is G.V. Black's classification of caries?

G.V. Black’s classification of caries is one of the most widely used methods to classify carious lesions. It was developed by G.V. Black in the early 1900s.

The classification describes caries based on the anatomical location on the tooth. It is one of the easiest classifications to use in order to describe caries. It is made up of 5 classes (with a sixth class being added later).

Class I

Class I describes caries affecting the pits and fissures of posterior teeth (molars and premolars) i.e. just the occlusal surface, caries in the occlusal two-thirds of posterior teeth and also the lingual/palatal surface of anterior teeth (canines and incisors).
