What is Herpangina?

Herpangina is an acute viral illness. It predominantly affects children and is self-limiting. It is characterised by the sudden onset of fever, sore throat and painful vesicular lesions in the oropharynx. 

It is most common between the ages of 3-10 years, particularly in nurseries and schools. 

Aetiology of Herpangina

Herpangina is caused predominantly by the RNA coxsackievirus A (especially type A4). Occasionally, it may be caused by coxsackievirus B or other enteroviruses. 

The condition is transmitted through respiratory droplets, faecal-oral spread or through direct contact with a contaminated surface.
